Seoul shares open sharply lower on U.S. losses

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korean stocks began sharply lower on Tuesday on overnight U.S. losses stemming from mounting European debt fears, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) opened 85.71 points lower, or down 4.84 percent, to 1,683.94.
U.S. stocks plunged on Monday on concerns over worries that the Greek debt crisis may spill over into the global banking system.
The local currency opened at 1,200 won to the U.S. dollar, down 21.9 won from Friday's close. The South Korean market was closed Monday for National Foundation Day.
