GM Korea launches new Malibu mid-size sedan
SEOUL (Yonhap) - GM Korea Co., the South Korean unit of U.S. automaker General Motors Co., unveiled its new mid-size Malibu sedan for the domestic market on Tuesday.
The carmaker said the new Malibu represents the eighth-generation model of the popular sedan that was first introduced in 1964 and has logged combined sales reaching 8.5 million units so far.
The company said the car's exterior design carries the DNA of the Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette and brings a "sporty sensibility" to the family sedan segment.
"Korea is the first country to produce and sell the all-new Malibu," said GM Korea president Mike Arcamone at the unveiling ceremony in Seoul. He added that with its expressive styling, outstanding ride and handling and top-notch safety features, the car will exceed consumer expectations.
The Malibu comes equipped with either a 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter fuel-efficient, high-powered four-cylinder gasoline engine connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. It has six air bags and a lane departure warning system as part of its safety features.
GM Korea said that it will receive orders starting this month with production to be carried out at its Bupyeong plant west of Seoul. Domestic sales of the car will begin in earnest on Nov. 1 with overseas sales of the car expected for early 2012.
