New state seal completed

SEOUL, Oct. 4 (Yonhap) -- The government has completed the production of the new state seal and opened it to the media on Tuesday, the home affairs ministry said.
The seal was completed late last month and will be used in state and diplomatic documents as soon as related laws are revised as early as this month, the Ministry of Home Administration and Security said.

The government has undertaken the production of the nation's fifth state seal since police investigators concluded in September last year that the old seal was not made in a traditional Korean way, different from what was claimed. The production cost the government a total of 215 million won (US$180,824).
Formed of a gold alloy, the new stamp was 10.4 centimeters in length, width and height, and weighs 3.38 kilograms, according to the ministry. The stamp was 0.3 centimeters bigger and 1.23 kilograms heavier than the old one.
Iridium, a rare metal, was newly added to make the national seal in order to increase its solidity and prevent cracks, the ministry said.
In July, a local appeals court sentenced Min Hong-gyu, head of the previous seal production team, to three years in prison for fraud. The government also took disciplinary measures against eight officials who neglected their duty of verifying the producer and supervising the whole production process.
