Chinese vessels fined W28 bln for illegal fishing in 2007-11: report
SEOUL, Oct. 4 (Yonhap) -- Chinese vessels caught illegally fishing in South Korean waters were fined a total of 28 billion won (US$23 million) over the past five years, a report showed Tuesday.
In the report submitted for a parliamentary audit, the Korea Coast Guard said it seized a total of 1,887 Chinese boats fishing in Korean waters without licenses from 2007 until August of this year and imposed 30 million to 60 million won in fines for each ship.
Of those fined, 1,673 boats were operating in Korea's economic exclusive zone in the Yellow Sea and 214 violated the northern limit line, a tense maritime area separating two Koreas, the report noted.
"As physical clashes often take place when Chinese vessels violently resist (authority) due to the bail deposit, (the government) should use diplomatic efforts alongside a crackdown," said Rep. Kang Ki-jung of the Democratic Party, who released the report.
There have been violent clashes between Chinese fishermen and the Coast Guard, with one officer losing his life in such an incident several years ago. In March of this year, a 63-ton Chinese boat intentionally collided with a 3,000-ton Coast Guard patrol vessel off the west coast, injuring several officers.
