ANKARA (A.A) - October 4, 2011 - Turkish dailies mostly covered in their Tuesday issues Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's comments on German foundations and their financial assistance to municipalities administered by mayors of the Republican People's Party (CHP), establishment of a parliamentary committee that will work on the new Constitution and the introduction of Arabic language as an elective course in Turkish schools.
Sabah daily quoted Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying "German assistance to certain Turkish municipalities has been going on for years. The leader of the main opposition CHP should investigate his own mayors. German foundations have provided assistance to municipalities governed by the mayors of Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) as well. Most of the assistance took place as donations". Vatan daily quoted Erdogan as saying "German foundations who have extended financial assistance to terrorist organization PKK in the past have also provided assistance to CHP municipalities". Turkiye daily quoted Erdogan as saying "German foundations have provided assistance to CHP and BDP municipalities. If the main opposition party requests, we can provide the necessary documents proving such assistance".
Commenting on the preparations for the new Turkish Constitution, Yeni Safak daily said that Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek took the first step for the Constitution. Yeni Safak said that Cicek will establish a new parliamentary committee that will work on the new Constitution. Milliyet daily quoted Cemil Cicek as saying "the new committee will have three members from each political party represented at the Turkish Parliament". There are four political parties in the Turkish Parliament.
Dailies also highlighted the introduction of Arabic language as an elective course in Turkish schools. Vatan daily quoted the Turkish Ministry of National Education as saying "Arabic will be an elective course for grades 4 thru 8". Turkiye daily wrote that the Turkish Council of Ministers decided on which languages would be taught in Turkey. Turkiye daily quoted an official of the Turkish Ministry of National Education as saying "if they wish, high school students in Turkey can also choose Arabic as an elective course".
