S. Korean retailers' sentiment drops for Q4
SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korean retailers' confidence fell sharply for the fourth quarter of the year from three months earlier amid fears over another economic recession, but a majority of firms are still optimistic about their business conditions, a poll said Wednesday.
The retail business survey index for the October-December period came to 105, down from 119 for the third quarter of this year, according to the survey of 943 retailers carried out by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).
A reading above 100 means optimists outnumber pessimists.
The index has been above the benchmark 100 since the third quarter of 2009, peaking at 125 in the second quarter of 2011.
"The figure remained above the 100 mark as retailers expect year-end bargain sales and a rebound from sluggish third-quarter sales," said the KCCI in a statement. "But the index failed to turn around as they are concerned about the faltering economy."
The poll showed that online shopping malls have the brightest fourth-quarter outlook, with the index for the sector reading 134 on hopes that consumers will prefer online stores than offline ones in order to find cheaper goods.
The index for department stores and large discount chains remained positive with readings of 105 and 102, respectively, while the one for small supermarkets stood at a mere 96, it said.
