Russia, China veto UNSC draft resolution on Syria.
UNITED NATIONS, October 5 (Itar-Tass) - Russia and China have vetoed a
draft resolution on Syria, tabled by Western countries at the UN Security
Council.
The draft resolution, which was sponsored by France, Germany,
Portugal, and Britain, threatened Syria with sanctions if the authorities
of that country would go ahead with the suppression of opposition
activities..
Nine countries voted in favour of the draft resolution, two voted
against it and four abstained.
A draft resolution is regarded as adopted if nine out of 15
member-countries of the UNSC vote for it provided none of UNSC Permanent
Members veto it.
In this case, two UNSC members -- Moscow and Beijing -- exercised
their veto right. Therefore, according to the UNSC rules of procedure, the
draft resolution is reckoned non-adopted.
