S. Korea to conduct firing drill on Yellow Sea this week
SEOUL, Oct. 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will hold live-fire drills on border islands in the Yellow Sea this week, the military said Thursday.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the Northwest Islands Defense Command will carry out an exercise Friday morning on Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong islands off the west coast.
"This is a routine exercise designed to improve our capabilities," a JCS official said. "We will also try to establish a firm defense posture in our waters."
The official said representatives from the Military Armistice Commission will be on hand for the drill. He did not specify how many rounds will be fired but said K-9 self-propelled guns will be among the weapons used in the exercise.
The military also held live-fire drills in the Yellow Sea in March and May of this year.
Yeonpyeong and Baengneyong are located just south of the Northern Limit Line (NLL), a de facto maritime border between the Koreas, and the waters around them have seen deadly naval skirmishes and armed provocations by North Korea.
North Korea refuses to recognize the NLL, drawn by the U.S.-led United Nations Command, while South Korea has rejected the North's request that the line be moved farther south.
The Koreans remain technically in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, rather than a peace treaty.
Separately, South Korea and the U.S. are planning their regular joint naval exercise in waters near the Pacific island of Guam later this month, a military official said Thursday.
A Navy official said the biennial joint exercise will involve destroyers and submarines from the two Navies.
"It will be a search and rescue exercise, designed to improve the interoperability of our Navies," the official explained, without providing an exact date for the drill.
