Appliance makers, retailers join hands with high-tech fridges
SEOUL, Oct. 5 (Yonhap) -- Korean home appliance makers are joining hands with brick-and-mortar retailers to introduce computerized refrigerators that let shoppers buy groceries from their own kitchens.
Samsung Electronics Co., a major consumer electronics maker, said Wednesday that it has partnered with E-Mart, South Korea's largest discount outlet, to create Internet-connected refrigerators that let users place grocery orders from home.
The new refrigerator is equipped with an 8-inch touch screen display that stores information on some 22,000 items available at E-Mart stores, Samsung said.
Samsung and E-Mart jointly developed the fridge over about one year to help shoppers save time and to fuel sales.
Samsung's move follows its hometown rival LG Electronics Inc., which announced new fridges with a Web ordering system linked to Homeplus Co., the country's No. 2 discount store.
LG and Homeplus, a South Korean unit of Tesco Plc., released refrigerators equipped with a touchscreen on the door, which serves as a personal assistant that recommends recipes and manages the food inventory.
