Seoul shares open higher on U.S. gains

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korean stocks got off to a strong start on Thursday, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 55.97 points, or 3.36 percent, to 1,722.49 in the first 15 minutes of trading, rebounding from a plunge in the previous session.
Most shares gained ground across the board, with market bellwether Samsung Electronics jumping 4.04 percent.
U.S. stocks rallied on bright economic data and Europe's move to support the region's struggling banks. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 1.21 percent and the Nasdaq composite index rose 2.32 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,183.1 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15 a.m., up 7 won from Wednesday's close.
