Korean cultural festival starts in Hong Kong

HONG KONG, Oct. 6 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean festival opened in Hong Kong Thursday to promote Korean culture in the Chinese territory, Seoul's consulate general here said.
Following a year of preparation, "Festive Korea" will be held throughout October, featuring cultural, art and sports events including a contemporary art exhibition, a film festival and taekwondo performances.
"Hong Kong is not only an international finance center, but also a cosmopolitan metropolis where East meets West," said Jun Ok-hyun, the South Korean consul general. "It is my great pleasure to present the first 'Festive Korea' in Hong Kong -- the core city of Asia and the world.
"I hope the event will encourage meaningful collaboration and deepen mutual understanding between Hong Kong and Korea," he added. "I sincerely wish for the friendship between Korea and Hong Kong to progress continuously."
Hong Kong is South Korea's fourth-largest export market after China, the U.S. and Japan, while South Korea is Hong Kong's sixth-largest market. Bilateral trade between the two economies amounted to more than US$24 billion in 2010.
South Korean TV dramas, movies, pop songs and fashion have become increasingly popular in Hong Kong, setting off a wave of Korean language study and practice of the traditional Korean martial art taekwondo.
