Pantech set to launch high-end 4G smartphone

SEOUL, Oct. 6 (Yonhap) -- Pantech Co., South Korea's third-largest mobile-phone maker, said Thursday it will release a high-end smartphone later this month that will run on a faster network, hoping to differentiate its new device with a motion recognition feature.
The handset maker announced the Vega LTE smartphone, an Android-based gadget that is compatible with the fourth generation (4G) wireless technology called long term evolution (LTE).
The Vega LTE sports a motion recognition feature that lets users answer incoming calls by waving their hands before the device, according to Pantech.
The new device has a camera on the front, which senses hand gestures. The motion recognition feature can be used to turn pages in electronics book reading applications or to scroll through photos saved on the mobile phone.
Pantech's new flagship model is ultra slim at 9.35 millimeters, the thinnest among the LTE smartphones available in the market, the company claimed. It weighs 135.3 grams.
The model will be released later this month via SK Telecom Co., South Korea's largest mobile operator.
SK Telecom and LG Uplus Co., the third-largest wireless carrier, began offering the faster LTE service this summer in major Korean cities, to meet demand from data-guzzling smartphone users. SK Telecom is expected to start a nationwide LTE coverage in 2013 while LG aims to offer nationwide service next year.
As consumers are expected to download a large amount of multimedia content and stream movies online to take advantage of the faster networks, handset makers have been keen on improving the screen quality of their new 4G smartphones.
Pantech follows Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. in introducing LTE smartphones in the domestic market, with enhanced display screens.
Pantech, which trails behind the two local electronics giants in terms of shipments of mobile phones in South Korea, also plans to release a tablet computer before December.
