SEOUL (Yonhap) - The following are the major cultural and tourist festivals to be held in South Korea in October.

* Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival
When: Oct. 7-10
Where: Hwaseong Haenggung, Yeonmudae and other places in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province
Celebrating its 48th anniversary this year, the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival is one of the largest culture and tourism festivals in Korea. Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon, situated about 50 kiometers south of Seoul, is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, and commemorates the filial affection and innovations of King Jeongjo, the 22nd monarch of the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910), who built the fortress. Over the years, Hwaseong Cultural Festival has become established as a quintessential regional cultural festival that promotes the traditional culture and arts of Suwon. Events will include reenactments of King Jeongjo's parade to the royal tomb and a citizens' parade, a liquor-serving ceremony for royal ancestors and a reenactment of Queen Hyegyeonggung Hong's 60th birthday feast. * Seoul International Fireworks Festival
When: Oct. 8
Where: Han River Park, Seoul
Constellations of fireworks will light the autumn sky over the Han River bisecting Seoul on Oct. 8. Three teams from Portugal, Japan and South Korea will fire a total of 110,000 fireworks from 7:30 to 9 p.m. KST. Tamaya Co. of Japan will launch detailed displays on a theme of "Harmony of Light" and accompanied by traditional Japanese tunes. Luso of Portugal will display European-styled fireworks alongside popular songs using a "Jukebox" theme. Hanhwa, representing Korea, will show designs on the theme of "the Great Power" using sophisticated multi-media technology. * Hanseong Baekje Cultural Festival
When: Oct. 28-30
Where: Peace Square of Olympic Park, Seoul
Hanseong is the old name of Seoul and the Hanseong Baekje Festival has been held in the eastern ward of Songpagu since 1994 to show the splendid legacies of Hanseong Baekje (18 B.C.-475 A.D.). Programs include a "Journey back to Baekje," experiencing Baekje and touring the Baekje village. Visitors will also see exhibitions of daily items used during the Baekje period and can participate in natural dyeing experiences or play traditional folk games. * Seoul Performing Arts Festival
When: Sept. 28-Oct. 31
Where: Arko Arts Theater and other venues in Seoul
The SPAF 2011 is one of the five performing arts festivals held in Seoul from September through November. Thirty-seven companies from eight countries, including Germany, Italy, France, Australia and Japan, will perform 37 plays, dances and multidisciplinary performances. The shows range from drama, dance and musicals to outdoor performances.

* Masan Chrysanthemum Festival
When: Oct. 28-Nov. 6
Where: First Pier, Masan, South Gyeongsang Province
Masan, a port city on the south coast, is an excellent area for growing chrysanthemums because of its mild weather. At this time of year, Masan port is in full bloom with 500,000 chrysanthemum plants. Festival programs include an exhibition of more than 10,000 chrysanthemum products from 200 species of the flower, a singing contest, a photography competition and performances of traditional folk games and dances. Visitors may also taste food and tea made with chrysanthemum flowers.

* Jeju Haenyeo Festival
When: Oct. 15-16
Where: Haenyeo Museum and the vicinity of Sehwa Port, Jeju Island
Jeju is a subtropical resort island off the Korean Peninsula and its haenyeo, or diving women, are regarded as a living symbol of the resort island and indicative of the strength of Korean women. Festival programs offer cultural and folk events, demonstrations of diving and the harvesting of shells and edible delicacies from the sea by the haenyeo.
