Politkovskaya award goes to Syrian human rights activist.

LONDON, October 7 (Itar-Tass) -- The 2011 annual Anna Politkovskaya
award went to Syrian human rights activist Razan Zaitouneh, the Reach All
Women in War (RAW in WAR) organization said on Thursday.
RAW in WAR annually presents the award on the eve of the murder of
outstanding journalist and government critic Anna Politkovskaya who was
shot dead on October 7, 2006.
The organization said the award goes to women human rights defenders
from a conflict zone in the world who, like Anna, stand up for the victims
of this conflict, often at great personal risk.
Zaitouneh, 34, could not receive the award as she is currently staying
in Syria and hiding from authorities who accuse her of supporting
terrorism and operating in the interests of foreign countries.
In 2005 lawyer Zaitouneh launched The Human Rights in Syria Internet
page and in March 2011 reported the security force assault on a mosque in
Deraa which was the center of anti-government manifestations.
This year Zaitouneh was also nominated for the Andrei Sakharov award
instituted by the European parliament. The winner is expected to be
announced this month.
