Defending champ Yang remains in lead after two rounds at Korea Open golf
CHEONAN, South Korea, Oct. 7 (Yonhap) -- Defending champion Yang Yong-eun remained at the top of the leaderboard after two rounds at the Korea Open golf tournament here Friday.
Yang, who shared the first round lead with American Rickie Fowler Thursday, shot a one-under 70 to get to five-under after two rounds at the Woojeong Hills Country Club here, about 90 kilometers south of Seoul.
Joining him at five-under are Fowler, the 2010 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, and Rory McIlroy, this year's U.S. Open champion. Fowler also shot a 70, while McIlroy did one better with 69.
Also at five-under is South Korean Mo Joong-kyung, who had the best round of the day with a 66. His round included five birdies and an eagle.
Yang, who began his round at 7:35 a.m., said he struggled with cold conditions in the morning, but he regained his touch as the temperature rose.
"I couldn't really hit it far in the morning," Yang said. "It got better later in the day. I am disappointed I couldn't get any lower today."
Yang missed several short putts. On the par-3 13th, his fourth hole of the day, he struck his tee shot to within four feet but missed the birdie attempt. Then on the 17th, he missed another four-footer, this time for par.
Mo had a much better day and scored an eagle when his wedge shot from 98 yards away dropped into the cup.
"I've played on this course many times, but this was my best score," he said. "I think the key will be to score well on the tricky par-3s on this course."
