Iran's Women Football Team Advance to Semis

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran became the first team to book their place in the semi-finals of the 2011 West Asian Women's Football Championship after defeating hosts and defending champions the UAE 4-1 in the second round of Group B matches in Abu Dhabi.
Maryam Rahimi put Iran 1-0 up with ten minutes at the Sultan bin Zayed Stadium played and although Sabrine Mamay equalized for the hosts eight minutes later a Niloofar Ardallani penalty on the half-hour mark ensured the Iranians went into the interval with the lead.

Iran extended that lead in the 79th minute when Rahimi scored her second of the game and third of the competition following her brace in the 8-1 hammering of Lebanon in their tournament opener.

Sara Ghomi sealed Iran's 4-1 victory four minutes into stoppage-time that leaves the UAE needing to avoid defeat to Lebanon in their final Group B match on Saturday if the title holders are to avoid early elimination from the tournament.

Lebanon joined the UAE on three points after Ghiwa Saleh goal one minute into second-half stoppage-time saw the Lebanese edge Syria 1-0 at the later match at the same venue.

With Iran on six points and the UAE and Lebanon on three, Syria are out of the reckoning for a place in the semi-finals and will be playing for pride on Saturday against an Iran side that cannot finish lower than second.
