Seoul shares open higher on euro hopes
SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korean stocks started higher on Monday as investor sentiment was boosted by progress in helping troubled European countries and U.S. jobs data, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) added 0.5 percent, or 8.83 points, to 1,768.6 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
The leaders of France and Germany agreed to act in coordination to help Europe's banking sector on Sunday amid the region's crisis, shoring up investor confidence.
Tech blue chips led the gain with Samsung Electronics going up more than 2 percent and display panel maker LG Display jumping more than 3 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,176.15 won to the greenback as of 9:15 a.m., up 1.55 won from Friday's close.
