ANKARA (A.A) - October 10, 2011 - Turkish dailies mostly covered in their Monday issues a Turkish culture and food festival in southern California, visit of Turkish main opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the demise of Erdogan's mother and Turkey's efforts to close the Mahmur Camp in north of Iraq.
Daily TURKIYE wrote that hundreds of Angelenos visited the "Anatolia Culture and Food Festival" in Southern California over the weekend. "Thanks to the festival, Americans had a chance to taste Turkish food and learn about the history of Anatolia," TURKIYE wrote. Daily YENI SAFAK wrote that Californians were simply amazed by the "Anatolia Culture and Food Festival". "Armenians of Turkish origin listened to the azan in tears at the festival," YENI SAFAK said. Daily ZAMAN wrote that the "Anatolia Culture and Food Festival" enchanted Californians. Daily ZAMAN quoted Loretta Sanchez, a member of the U.S. Congress from California, as saying "I am looking forward to visiting the real cities of Turkey".
Dailies also highlighted the visit of Turkish main opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the demise of Erdogan's mother. In a 20-minute meeting, Kilicdaroglu offered his condolences to the Erdogan family, daily VATAN said. Daily CUMHURIYET said that Kilicdaroglu visited Erdogan along with the deputy chairs of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Erdogan Toprak, Gursel Tekin and Akif Hamzacebi. Kilicdaroglu's visit to Erdogan took place behind closed doors, daily CUMHURIYET also said.
Dailies drew attention to Turkey's efforts to close the Mahmur Camp in north of Iraq. Daily SABAH said that Ankara will make a request to the United Nations and the administration in north of Iraq to close down the Mahmur Camp. "Turkey wishes to close the Mahmur Camp from which terrorist organization PKK benefits. Those Turkish citizens living in the camp and who decide to return to Turkey will receive financial support and jobs," daily SABAH wrote. Daily TURKIYE wrote that Ankara will begin putting pressure on Iraq and the U.N. for the closure of the Mahmur Camp.
