Turkish press review
ANKARA (A.A) - October 12, 2011 - Turkish dailies mostly covered in their Wednesday's issue Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's reaction to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli's visit to Erdogan, and Turkey's victory over Azerbaijan in the qualifying rounds of the 2012 European Championship.
Hurriyet, Turkiye, Yeni Safak, Sabah, Vatan and Cumhuriyet wrote Premier Erdogan's reaction to Sarkozy who accused Turkey of committing genocide against Armenians during his recent visit to Armenia. Erdogan, addressing Sarkozy, said, "you should first pull yourself together. You talk different in France, Armenia and Turkey. Such an indecisive and multilateral political leadership cannot be pursued. Turkey is not a piece of cake." Erdogan also reminded Sarkozy that there were 600,000 Armenians and 500,000 Turks living in France. He noted that statesmanship necessitated thinking the future generations, not the future elections. Erdogan reacted Sarkozy, and said that during his visit to Armenia, Sarkozy made advices to Turkey in order to invest in his own election process.
Almost all newspapers wrote MHP leader Bahceli's visit to Erdogan at his office in Parliament. Bahceli offered his condolences to Erdogan whose mother passed away last week. Bahceli told Erdogan, "you fulfilled your responsibilities to your mother as a son." Erdogan, in return, said, "I visited South Africa. It was as if my mother waited for my return. We talked, we said goodbye to each other." Bahceli also told Erdogan, "you have become a good example of mother-son relationship which is in our beliefs, culture and traditions."
Another topic which is high on the agenda of today's newspapers is Turkish national soccer team's victory over Azerbaijan. Turkey defeated Azerbaijan 1-0 in a Group A game in Istanbul in the qualifying round of the 2012 European Championship. The Turkish team finished the group at the second spot to make their way for the play-off round. The scorer was Burak Yilmaz. Turkey's opponents in play-off round will become clear tomorrow.
