Global recession slows down labor migration from Turkey

ANKARA (A.A) - October 12, 2011 - Global economic downturn and high jobless rates have forced Turks to seek less employment opportunities abroad or change their workforce market of choice, data showed.
Labor migration from Turkey dropped 32.6 percent over the past five years from 81,379 to 54,847 as the figure was down 4.5 percent in January-July 2011 to 27,421, according to data from Turkey's statistics authority and employment agency.
Russia and Turkic republics in Central Asia were two biggest workforce markets for Turks after disintegration of the Soviet Union as European countries in the 1960s and Arab countries in the 1970s drew Turkish workers the most.
