TWO LRT TRAINS COLLIDE, 300 PASSENGERS ESCAPE INJURY

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Three hundred passengers escaped injury in an accident involving two Star light rail transit (LRT) coaches about 200
metres from the Bukit Jalil LRT Station, here Wednesday.

However, four passengers suffered light injuries in the incident at 6.30pm
and were being treated at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre as
outpatients.

Cheras District Police Chief, ACP Ahmad Amir Mohd Hashim said a coach from
Sungai Besi stopped suddenly about 200 metres from the Bukit Jalil LRT Station
before being rammed by another LRT coach from the rear on the same
track.

"There were about 300 passengers in both the coaches and all passengers
had been taken out of the coaches without serious injury, including the two
drivers of the trains. However, three women and another man suffered light
injuries.

"We are still investigating the cause of the accident and we will take
statements from both the LRT drivers to find out the actual cause of the
incident," he said when met at the scene.

He said about 20 police personnel together with two ambulances rushed to
the scene shortly after receiving information on the incident, and helped to
evacuate the victims trapped in both coaches.

A RapidKL executive, Suffian Baharuddin, said the incident could be due to
a technical glitch but the actual cause could only be learnt after the police
and the RapidKL had completed their investigations.

He said as a result of the incident, services in both directions at the
several stations were suspended for the rest of the day.

"The coaches involved in the accident were still on the tracks and we hope
the situation would return to normal tomorrow (Thursday)," he said.
