PRODUCTS CONTAMINATED WITH MELAMINE WILL BE DESTROYED

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai Wednesday gave his assurance that any food product found contaminated with melamine would be destroyed as soon as it is found.

He told a press conference that Health Ministry officers had been deployed
throughout the country to test products on the market to ensure that no melamine
contaminated product would be sold to consumers.

"We have sent officers to take samples of food products from China,
especially milk, milk powder and other dairy products. The moment we find a
melamine-contaminated product, the product will be destroyed," said Liow after
giving out hampers to patients at the Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Ward, Hospital
Kuala Lumpur.

According to Liow, in comparison to many other countries, Malaysia's
response to the melamine threat was immediate.

"The moment we found out that there was melamine contamination in dairy
products on Sept 13, we issued a Level Six Auto Rejection Inspection at all
customs inspection points for all dairy products from China.

"Today, we issued a Level Five Inspection on all products coming from China
to ensure that no melamine-contaminated products enter the country. Our officers
will take samples of the product, test and inspect them before letting them
through," said Liow.
