Supreme Court confirms prison term for agent-turned-spy

SEOUL, Oct. 13 (Yonhap) -- The Supreme Court upheld on Thursday a lower court's six-year prison term for a former South Korean intelligent agent who spied for the North Korean regime.
Known only as Park, the former agent for the Agency for National Security Planning, currently the National Intelligence Service, was convicted of conveying national secrets, including those in nine military manuals, to a North Korean spy from 2003-2005. The Seoul High Court had sentenced him to six years behind bars along with a six-year suspension of qualification.
The top court also upheld the Seoul High Court's one-and-half-year prison term for a man surnamed Sohn for joining Park's espionage activities, along with a suspension of qualification for an identical period.
Park became widely known after another former ranking intelligence agent unveiled the agency's undercover activities in 1998, which revealed to the public Park's anti-North intelligence activities conducted under the code name "Black Venus."
The revelation led to Park's dismissal. Park then turned to helping the North after frequently contacting North Korean spies whom he had gotten to know while in the local spy unit.
