Baby on mum's lap injured in NSW car crash

SYDNEY (AAP) - Oct 14 - Police have warned parents to ensure small children travel in proper car safety seats after a toddler sitting on his mother's lap was critically injured.
Mandeep Singh, 30, crashed a Toyota Hiace into the rear of a truck while his wife and 18-month-old son Angad were sitting in the front passenger seat about 5am (AEDT) on Friday.
The toddler suffered severe facial and internal injuries after the airbags in the van activated in the accident at Harris Park in western Sydney.
Senior Sergeant Peter Jenkins said all parents had a legal and moral obligation to have their children restrained in approved safety seats and capsules.
"It is paramount to their safety," Sergeant Jenkins told reporters on Friday.
"This child suffered serious injuries because he was unrestrained, sitting on the lap of his mother who, incidentally, was restrained."
The boy was rushed to Westmead Children's Hospital and remains in a critical, but stable condition.
The boy's mother, 26, was trapped in the car for about an hour and is also in hospital in a stable condition.
"It's my fault, I know that. I didn't put a (baby) car seat (in the car)," Mr Singh told the Seven Network.
"Only one message I give you. Without seat belt and without any baby seat, don't travel."
