N. Korea modernizing East Sea port to export mineral resources
SHENYANG (Yonhap) - North Korea appears likely to complete a project to modernize the East Sea port of Tanchon by next year as part of its efforts to export natural resources, a source said Friday.
Tanchon, a home to mines in South Hamgyong province, is known for producing key industrial ingredients, including magnesia clinker and light burned magnesia.
The construction of a wharf and other facilities are in the final stage, said a source familiar with the issue, adding that the North plans to open the port on April 15, the centennial birthday of the North's founder, Kim Il-sung, the late father of current leader, Kim Jong-il.
The construction seems to be the latest case that the North wants to show off as part of its stated goal of building a prosperous and powerful nation by the centennial anniversary.
Kim has inspected the construction site of Tanchon Port, which has the potential to handle millions of tons of cargo a year, the North's official Korean Central News Agency reported earlier this month.
