Make Malaysia A Top Shopping Haven, Says Tourism Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- The Tourism Ministry has called on retailers and all industry players to help position Malaysia as the top shopping destination, including for IT (information technology) products. Tourism Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen said among the best ways to promote the country as a shopping heaven was through social media like Facebook, taking advantage of people's penchant for IT in their daily lives. "Besides that, more local organizations should also explore consumer technology-related retail tourism to further enhance the industry," she told reporters after switching on the Christmas tree lights at a shopping mall here Wednesday night. She pointed out that tourist shopping expenditure contributed billions of ringgit to the country's coffers annually. For this reason, she said it was important for all Malaysians to constantly promote the country to foreigners, helping out the ministry in the process. -- BERNAMA
