Be Aware Of The Power Of Communication - Information Ministry Sec-Gen
By Norfarhana Ahya Arip
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- Youth should be aware of the power of
communication and express their freedom in the correct perspective, said
Information Communication and Culture Ministry secretary-general
Kamaruddin Siaraf.
However, he cautioned that danger lurked when freedom of expression and
information was left unchecked.
Urging youth to be extra careful and verify their sources of information
before undertaking to use them, especially sources from the social media,
Kamaruddin said such a move was imperative, "lest we are accused of spreading
untruths".
"The concept of freedom of expression and information, especially among the
youth, needs to be addressed carefully to assure the interest of public
security.
"We are aware that it is dangerous if freedom of expression and information
are left unchecked...so, there must be a line to indicate what is allowed and
not allowed within the ambit of freedom of expression," he said.
Kamaruddin said this when opening a workshop for youth on 'Freedom of
Expression and Information - A Pragmatic and Creative Approach for Youth' here
Wednesday.
The workshop is attended by 80 student leaders from the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Culture Organisation (Unesco) countries.
Noting that youth currently viewed issues which impacted people's lives
locally and globally, Kamaruddin said the use of the social media, like
'Facebook' and 'Twitter', would influence public opinion.
He said that could result in either bringing a positive outcome or
conversely, a negative reaction.
"Take the responsibility in expressing your freedom to your peers or society
in the correct manner so that society would not get the wrong concept about that
information," he advised.
The five-day workshop comprised paper presentation, group discussions and
forum.
Among panelists on the forum are Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama)
editor-in-chief Yong Soo Heong, Hulu Selangor Member of Parliament P.
Kamalanathan and The Sun Media Group Sdn Bhd political editor Zainon Ahmad.
