Laos-Thailand sign MOU on enlarging SMEs

(KPL) The Small Medium and Enterprise Promotion and Development Offices (SMEPDO) of Lao PDR and Thailand signed a memorandum of understanding on enlarging trade and investment last week in Vientiane.
The signatories to document were Lao SME Promotion and Development Office, Director General, Mr. Somdy Inmyxai and Deputy Director General of Thai SME Promotion Office Chawan Svasti Xuto.
The event was attended by Mr. Bounthavy Sysouphanthong Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment and concern officials.The MOU is to enhance bilateral relationship and increase cooperation on trade and investment of two countries. It also enlarges cooperation development along common border, business network.
Mr. Somdy said, “the two parties agreed to team up to work on SMEs sectors of the two countries. They have set initial cooperation on many sectors including tourism management, industry and handicrafts”.The two governments are conscious of the importance of SMEs in socio-economic relationships with other countries, especially the Greater Mekong Sub-region and ASEAN countries.
Laos-Thailand will expand investment cooperation and promote the two parties of SME development to manufacture goods for supply in and out of the region, this will also build a sustainable of economy, Mr Chawan said.The Thai SME promotion Office is aware Laos promotes industrial investments with privileged export status to the US and EU. However , Laos is not able to take advantage of the situation because industrial manufacturing remains low.Laos also has large agricultural areas awaiting investment for development, it is a good opportunity to develop sustainable investment trade and marketing with low production cost.
The cooperation is a way to upgrade SME capacity competition and it is the heart of economic development.Previously, the Thai SME promotion Office had supported and the Lao SME Promotion and Development Office with training courses for both officials and business people. The SME sector is an important component in developing economic of the country.
The Lao government recognized the significant potential of SMEs to contribute to economic growth and wants to support that growth.
