China narrows down suspects in Chinese dumplings case: source
BEIJING, Sept. 29 Kyodo -
Chinese investigators have narrowed down the number of suspects in the
contamination of meat dumplings that made people sick in China, but they are
all denying involvement, a Chinese source said Monday.
Several people are now suspects in the June case, down from late August when
nine employees at Tianyang Food in Hebei Province were viewed as possibly
linked to the incident.
Chinese authorities have been looking into employees at the factory after
frozen meat dumplings produced there made people sick in both China and Japan.
The case in China was triggered by dumplings that were sold at a reduced price,
after being pulled from the market following the food poisoning cases in Japan
in December 2007 and January 2008.
Four people became sick in the Chinese case, and methamidophos was detected in
the dumplings. The same pesticide was detected in the Japanese cases, which
caused 10 people from three families to fall sick.
