Almost 30,000 are illiterate in Luang Prabang

(KPL) Luang Prabang says that almost 30,000 of its population are illiterate. The province is focusing on non-formal education expansion to reduce the illiteracy of its people.
Among the illiterate people, almost 2,000 are aged between 6-14, 2,700 aged between 15-24, 4,300 aged between 25-40 and almost 20,000 aged 41upwards.
The Luang Prabang Provincial Education Service said last week it aimed to have 6,000 people, who are aged between 15-40, be literate in this academic year 2008-09, promote school enrolment of underprivileged children and reduce the class drop rate of students and promote vocational training courses, especially for the people in poor and mountainous districts.
Last year, Luang Prabang declared two districts Luang Prabang and Xiengngeun as literate.
