RECALLED PRODUCT NOT SOLD IN MALAYSIA
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- A biscuit product made in Malaysia, which was found to be containing melamine and recalled from the Taiwan market, is not sold in Malaysia, said the Health Ministry.
Food Safety and Quality Division Director Noraini Mohd Othman said the
ministry had conducted investigations into the matter following a report on The
Earth Times website on Sept 30 that a company in Taiwan had recalled the
product, "Regimen House Cheese Cracker Sandwich", produced by a Malaysian
company.
"The investigations revealed that the local company has been given a
contract to produce these biscuits for a company in Taiwan.
"A part of the ingredients used to make the biscuit, including milk
powder and cheese powder, are supplied by the Taiwanese company.
"This product was only made for a limited period for the Taiwan market
and is not sold in Malaysia," she said in a statement.
On the list of food products certified free of melamine, Noraini said,
todate a total of 1,008 products from 36 companies were found to be free of the
substance.
She also said a total of 1,997 products, worth RM469,158, had been seized
from the market for sampling purposes.
"This consists of 220 types of food product. Samples have been taken for
analysis by the Chemistry Department to ensure that they meet the standards
before they are sold in the market.
"Today, we have obtained the results for 12 more food products and they are
are found to have met the standards," she said.
Consumers are also advised to read the labels before buying food products.
