Doha 2020 Applicant File Reaches International Olympic Committee

Lausanne, Switzerland, February 13 (QNA) -The Doha 2020 Bid Committee bidding for the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games today delivered its Applicant File to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee IOC . The Doha 2020 delegation was led by HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, General Secretary of the Qatar Olympic Committee and Doha 2020 Vice Chairman. The delegation included leading Qatari athletes: Olympian shooter Nasser Al-Attiyah, swimmer Nada Arkaji, sprinter Noor Al-Malki and Para Athlete Ali Al-Mass as well as Doha 2020 Legal Director Tariq Falamazi, and Doha 2020 Public Relations Director Mohammad Al-Othman. HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, said "It is a proud moment to be delivering the Doha 2020 Applicant File to the IOC Headquarters here in Lausanne. A huge amount of work has gone into its production and I believe its contents are very strong. We look forward to making its contents public soon and continuing to build on our campaign to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the Middle East for the first time." "Our Applicant File contains a strong hosting plan that is based on many existing venues and a number of planned facilities. It also outlines an exciting legacy vision focused on building opportunities for Olympic sports in the region and growing participation across the Middle East especially among girls and women," he added. "2020 is a historic opportunity to grow the Olympic Movement in a new region and our Applicant File is a crucial step in our ambition to turn this opportunity into reality." Ali Al-Mass, Para Athlete, said: "Being here in Lausanne at IOC headquarters makes the Doha 2020 ambition seem even more real. If Doha is given the honour to stage the Games, it would give an amazing boost to the profile of paralympic sport across the Middle East and inspire people with disabilities in our region to take up sport. "The Applicant File started its journey to the headquarters of the IOC on Sunday at a send-off event at Doha International Airport.Nada Arkaji, who represented Qatar in swimming at the 2011 Doha Arab Games, said "It is a great honour to be travelling to the International Olympic Committee as part of the Doha 2020 delegation at such an exciting time for sports in the Middle East. I competed at the 2011 Arab Games hosted in Doha and that was a wonderful experience to compete in front of my home fans. "Sport has changed my life and I know that if the Olympic and Paralympic Games were to come here, to a region that has never had the honour of hosting the world s greatest sporting event, many more young lives across the Arab World would be changed for the better. "Nasser Al-Attiyah, Qatari four-time Olympian shooter and international rallying champion, said "I have had the great privilege of competing at four Olympic Games and seen first-hand their transformational impact and how they can inspire more young people to participate in sport. If Doha were to be given the honour of hosting the 2020 Games, I believe there is a wonderful opportunity to get many more young people across the Middle East playing sport and inspired by Olympic values." Al Attiyah is a four-time Olympian who competed for Qatar in Olympic shooting events at Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony Nasser Al Attiyah carried the Qatar team flag. At the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou Nasser Al Attiyah won the Gold medal as a member of the Qatar men s skeet team and a Bronze medal in the individual men s skeet competition. As well as being an Olympian, Nasser Al Attiyah is a champion rally driver, winning the Dakar Rally in 2011 and winning the Middle East Rally Championship seven times. Nada Arkaji, is a 18-year old female swimmer who made sports history when she became the first female swimmer for the Qatari national team. Nada competed for Qatar during the 2011 Arab Games this past December and aspires to break a new record this summer by being the first Qatari female athlete to qualify for the Olympic Games. Noor Al-Malki is a 100 and 200 meter sprinter, and is a recent recipient of the Qatar Olympic Committee s "Sport Athlete" award for the 2010-2011 season. Having won 2 gold medals in the 100m and 4x100m relay at the recent GCC athletics tournament she is eager to support Doha s Bid to bring the Olympic and Paralymic Games to the Arab World for the very first time in 2020.Mr Ali Al-Mass was ranked 10th in the IPC Athletics Official World Rankings 2011 for the Men s Discus throw F57. Born 1970, he participated in the Sydney 2000 and the Athens 2004 Games. Al-Mass has earned numerous gold medals in GCC championships for men's discus throw and shot-put, and was ranked 10th in the IPC Athletics Official World Rankings 2011 for the Men s Discus throw F57.
