Akihabara rampage suspect to be indicted

TOKYO, Oct. 6 Kyodo - Prosecutors have determined that a 26-year-old man arrested for the stabbing rampage in Tokyo's Akihabara district in June is mentally competent and that they can indict him over the incident, in which seven people were killed and 10 others were injured, investigative sources said Monday.

Tomohiro Kato will be indicted by Friday, the time limit for his detention,
over the charges of murder and attempted murder.
The decision by the Tokyo prosecutors came after a three-month psychiatric
examination on him has confirmed his mental competency, the sources said.
The confirmation is supported by the facts that he purchased a lethal knife
beforehand and posted messages hinting of the killing spree on a message board
of a cell phone website, according to the sources.
According to the investigation, Kato drove a 2-ton truck through the
electronics shopping area on June 8, hitting and killing three men, and fatally
stabbed four others with a dagger after getting out of the truck.
Kato was quoted as telling investigators, ''I was disgusted with (my) life''
and ''I thought about creating a big incident so I could be recognized by those
who are involved in the Internet world.''
