Thailand's higher fruit produce anticipated in 2012

BANGKOK, March 1 (TNA) - Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut says that he foresaw total Thai fruit proudce would considerably higher than last year and his ministry is, therefore, preparing measures to ensure stable fruit prices. According to the agriculture and cooperatives minister, fruit produce in the three eastern Thai provinces, including Chantaburi, Trat and Rayong, should reach 8,700 tonnes this year; while lichee produce in four northern Thai provinces, namely Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao and Nan is anticipated to even surge by up to 93 per cent from last year, to more than 60,000 tonnes in 2012. Theera insisted that his ministry has already prepared measures to keep Thai fruit prices stable in order to assist local agriculturalists, including finding domestic and overseas markets for Thai fruit produce, promoting processed fruit products and seeking an approved budget from the government's Farmer Assistance Policy Committee to be used for stabilizing Thai fruit prices. The minister affirmed, however, that his ministry's actions to maintain stable Thai fruit prices are in line with market mechanisms with retained market liquidity. (TNA)
