Financial aids asked for female flood victims

BANGKOK, March 6 (TNA) - On the occasion of the International Women's Day 2012, which falls on March 8, Thai female workers who have lost their earnings in the wake of the country's flooding crisis late last year have called for the government to provide them with adequate financial support. According to a latest survey conducted among 273 Thai female workers, aged 36-50, in flood-hit Nonthaburi, Samut Sakhon and Prathum Thani provinces, revenues of nearly 60 per cent of the respondents remained low, ranging from 5,000-10,000 baht monthly, with 83.5 per cent of them earning 201-300 baht daily and being indebted about 10,000-50,000 baht. The survey also found that part of the respondents had family, health and other problems, namely stress and insomnia, some of whom turned to rely on alcohols to relieve their stress. Most of the respondents, or over 57 per cent, requested their employers to pay their wages/salaries during flooding, followed by 23.1 per cent of them who called for additional financial assistance from their employers; while over 51 per cent urged the government to come up with remedial measures covering house restoration, control for consumer products prices and revised insurance policies to benefit flood victims and post-flood employment guarantee.
