Yemeni Nobel Peace laureate says Turkey to play key role in Syrian democratization

ISTANBUL (A.A) - March 19, 2012 - Yemen Nobel Peace Award Laureate Tawakel Karman said Monday Turkey had the biggest obligation in supporting Syrian people who struggle for a democratic regime in their country. "If Turkey continues to extend support and aid to the Syrian people, the international community will follow suit," Karman told Monday a conference on "the Arab Spring" at Istanbul's Bogazici University.       Karman said the Arab Spring had led Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen to topple their dictators which she said was the reason for instability and corruption, adding that their next challenge was to work for building civilian, modern and democratic countries. "And it's Syria's turn now. Syrians had made their first achievement by deciding to take to the streets. Women, men and young Syrians are making sacrifices for honor and freedom. Each day hundreds of them are dying but they continue their fight. And they will win," Karman said.
