Laos, Vietnam to invest US$35mln in new mobile company

(KPL) Two companies of LAO-ASIA Telecommunication and Vietnamese Viettel Global agreed to join investment in establishment of the Star Telecom Company with hope to attract more than 1 million customers across the country by 2010.
Chairman of Executive Board of Star Telecom Company, Mr Oulaha Thongvantha said the Company is ready to inject US$35 million for extending its network through 1,200 stations across the country.
“This aims to attract 1.5 million customers before expanding the network to Vietnam and Cambodia in the next period,” he continued.
The LAO-ASIA Telecommunication Company is under the authority of Ministry of National Defense and Viettel Global Company is under the control of Vietnamese Army.
Thanks to the special solidarity between Laos and Vietnam, the two companies signed an agreement to join investment and agreed to set up the Star Telecom Company, which Lao side holds 51% of share.
Initiatively, the company will spend about US$15 million on extending the network to 400 stations.
The stations are now under the construction, which expects to be completed by the end of this year, he said.
He said that the Star Telecom Company also hopes to compete in term of mobile service, telephone and other forms of services to provide more options to the customers by adding about US$20 million to enlarge mobile network system to 1,200 stations countrywide.
In addition, the company also plans to expand its network to Vietnam and Cambodia in the future in order to provide better service in Indochina countries, he said.
