Sectarian strife detrimental to Muslim world: Iranian Majlis speaker

TEHRAN, May 14 (MNA) – Efforts to foment sectarian strife are to the detriment of the Muslim world, Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani told a Palestinian official during a meeting in Tehran on Sunday. Commenting on the Palestinian issue, Larijani said that the restoration of Palestinian people’s rights is one of the main concerns of the Iranian nation. He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported the Palestinian cause, adding that Iran sides with the resistance movement in the region against the occupying Zionist regime. Sowing discord among Islamic ummah is one of the plots hatched by the enemies of Islam, he said, adding that sectarian strife will definitely harm the Muslim world. He went on to say that recent developments occurring in the region, such as popular uprisings in Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia, have kept the Zionist regime in isolation, which it should not be allowed to break free from. During a separate meeting with the Palestinian official on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi called on all Palestinian groups to maintain vigilance against the enemies’ conspiracies. Salehi emphasized the need to preserve unity among various Palestinian groups. Commenting on the Islamic Republic’s stance toward the Syrian issue, Salehi said that Iran is opposed to any foreign intervention in Syria’s internal affairs.
