Iran`s Samandarian to reprise “Play Strindberg” in Tehran

TEHRAN,June 12(MNA) -- The giant of Iranian theater Hamid Samandarian will stage Swiss dramatist Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s “Play Strindberg” for the third time in Tehran. Samandarian’s troupe will perform the play at the Iranshahr Theater Complex in the near future. Samandarian had directed the play in 1972 and 1999. Actor/director Homa Rusta, wife of Samandarian, first planned to stage the play, but the plan was cancelled due to certain personal reasons. Rusta, Reza Kianian and Ahmad Sa’atchian are main members of the cast. They had also performed the play in 1999. The play is a free adaptation of August Strindberg’s marriage tragedy “The Dance of Death”, using Strindberg’s characters. “Play Strindberg” is a black comedy in which Dürrenmatt’s satirical look at the trials and tribulations of a partnership deals with love, hate, opportunism, paranoia and death. About five years ago, Samandarian directed a production of Durrenmatt’s “Old Lady’s Visit” in Tehran.
