OIC may hold extraordinary meeting on Myanmar

TEHRAN, July 19 (MNA) – The Iranian representative to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Hamid Reza Dehghani, has said that the organization may hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss the massacre of Muslims in Myanmar.
“It is possible that an extraordinary meeting be requested (by the OIC), but the issue must be studied politically, and if an extraordinary meeting is requested,… member states will welcome it,” Dehghani told the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency in an interview published on Wednesday.
He added, “The Organization of Islamic Cooperation issued a statement about the killing of Muslim people in Myanmar on Tir 25, which corresponds to July 15, 2012, in which the government of Myanmar was asked to” treat its nationals equally.
“What the organization could do as the first step was issuing a statement and condemning the killing of Muslims in Myanmar,” Dehghani stated.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Dehghani criticized the United Nations Security Council for remaining silent about the massacre of Muslims in Myanmar and said, “The Security Council is responsible for threats to peace and security in the world and that the Security Council regards itself as the only authority in this regard and intervenes in and issues statements about certain other developments, which are not even true, announcing that peace and security have been endangered, but the Security Council has not taken any measures in this regard.”
