Police pledge to trace car bombers in Thai deep South

NARATHIWAT, THAILAND, July 23 (TNA) - Security units in Thailand’s deep South have pledged to accelerate tracking down car bombers who attacked a four-storey commercial building in Sungai Kolok district here on July 20. Authorities of the security units made the pledge, including speeding up an official investigation of the case, at a meeting chaired by Deputy National Police Chief General Suwat Chanittikul and Deputy Commander of the Southern Border Provinces Police Operation Centre Major General Surapong Kemasingka. But all the concerned security units acknowledged that they may need to spend more time gathering evidence from other sources, rather than those from close circuit television cameras (CCTVs) which are insufficient in Sungai Kolok. At the meeting, the local authorities concerned were also instructed to strictly perform their duties, especially during the ongoing Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. A 50-kilogram homemade bomb hidden in a pick-up which was parked in front of the commercial building in Sungai Kolok went off with a subsequent fire last Friday, injuring eight people. (TNA)
