Kofi Annan plan has not failed: Iran

TEHRAN, July 24 (MNA) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that the Kofi Annan plan for settling the Syrian crisis has not ended in failure. Kofi Annan, the UN-Arab League envoy on Syria, has put forward a plan for ending the crisis in Syria, which calls for a UN-supervised ceasefire by all parties, the withdrawal of soldiers and heavy weapons from cities, and the delivery of humanitarian assistance. “The Kofi Annan plan has not failed,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told a regular press briefing. However, Mehmanparast said certain countries and groups are trying to bring the plan to a “failure and create insecurity and instability inside Syria.” The Foreign Ministry official said the extension of the mission of the UN monitors in Syria shows that the Annan plan is still valid. He added, “Our position toward Syria is clear and we consider the Kofi Annan plan is the best solution.”
