Thailand to meet renewable energy target by 2021

BANGKOK, August 19 (TNA) - Thailand is confident of achieving its national target for renewable energy use at 25 percent by the year 2021. Director-General of the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency Krairit Nilkuha said the share of renewable energy use, calculated from Thailand’s total energy usage, reached 9.9 percent this year. Regardless, the amount of electricity produced from biogas was still far off the government’s target. This was due a shortfall in the country’s palm oil industry, which had a target of producing 1.8 million litres of ethanol and 3.2 million litres of biodiesel on a day's average. Other shortfalls were highlighted in the use of wind and waste for power production, which was attributed to insufficient funding and facilities. (TNA)
