Two mild quakes shake Thai North

BANGKOK, August 25 (TNA) - Two mild earthquakes jolted Thailand’s northern Chiang Rai and Lampang provinces overnight with no reports of any damage or casualties. Somboon Kositanon, Chief of the Mineral Resources Office, Region 1, in Lampang which oversees 17 northern Thai provinces, told reporters that the first quake measuring 2.8 on Richer Scale hit Chiang Rai at 9:42pm Friday night with its epicenter in Phan district, while another quake of magnitude 1.5 on the Richter Scale occurred in Lampang at 4:26am this morning, with its epicenter in Wang Nuea district. Somboon said both quakes were caused by the active Phayao fault, noting that local people might not have felt the tremors due to their low-intensity, and that the quake in Wang Nuea was the first in Lampang this year. According to the senior official, 37 quakes have been recorded in the Thai North from January-August 2012. (TNA)
