Search suspended for missing pilot
Ships and aircraft in northern Australia have been asked to keep a lookout for any
sign of missing 23-year-old pilot Hadleigh Smith whose plane disappeared on
Thursday.
Search coordinator Australian Maritime and Safety Authority earlier Saturday handed
the case over to the Northern Territory police.
Search and rescue spokesman Mick Spinks told AAP that wreckage from Mr Smith's GA8
Airvan freight plane - a plane wheel, a seat cushion and jerry cans - were found in
Buckingham Bay about 20km south-east of Elcho island, 540km east of Darwin.
"We've suspended the search and transferred it to the Northern Territory police," Mr
Spinks said.
"We searched the area again today but nothing further was found, so we've suspended
the search and handed over to the Northern Territory police."
An NT police spokeswoman said shipping and aircraft in the area have been asked to
keep watch for signs of the aircraft and Mr Smith, who lives on Elcho island and
resided previously in NSW.
