Syrian president welcomes Iran’s efforts to resolve situation in Syria

TEHRAN,Aug.28(MNA) – Iranian MP Alaeddin Boroujerdi said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad welcomes Iran’s efforts meant to resolve the problems facing Syria. Boroujerdi, who is the chairman of the Iranian Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, made the remarks during a press conference in Damascus on Sunday in reference to the meeting that he held with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on the same day. “During the meeting, Bashar Assad stated that he has confidence in Iran and emphasized that he welcomes any effort by Tehran meant to resolve Syria’s problems,” the Iranian MP stated, adding that the Islamic Republic is ready to take the measures necessary so that negotiations can be held between the Syrian government and the opposition groups. Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has said on several occasions that Tehran is ready to host such a meeting. Boroujerdi also stated that the countries supporting armed rebels in Syria should revise their attitude. “If revisions are made, Bashar Assad is ready to hold such a meeting. But this requires an end to support for armed (rebels) and the exertion of pressure on them to end violence and bloodshed in Syria.” Elsewhere in his remarks, Boroujerdi criticized the efforts being made by certain media outlets to depict Damascus as “insecure”.
