Iran's Siamand Rahman storms to powerlifting Paralympic gold

LONDON,Sept.6(MNA) - Siamand Rahman of Iran twice set Paralympic records as he claimed the gold medal in the men's +100kg weight class on Wednesday. The 24-year-old broke the record with his opening lift of 270kg in front of cheering Iranian supportes and then he lifted 280kg in his second attempt. In his third attempt, Rahamn failed to lift 301kg and surperisingly, he opted not to try for the record again in his fourth attempt. "I am so happy because of winning the gold medal but I am also sad since I could not lift the 301kg. I had lifted 310kg in my trainings prior to the Paralympic Games. I will do that in the next Paralympics," Rahman said. Faris Al-Ajeeli of Iraq seized the silver medal with his second lift of 242kg. South Korean Chun Keun Bae claimed the bronze with a best lift of 232kg. The 2012 London Summer Paralympics opened in on August 29 and runs until September 9. The Paralympic Games is the world's second largest major international multi-sport event, involving athletes with a range of physical challenges. Iran has sent 79 athletes, competing in 13 events, to the London Paralympics.
