Sukhothai under water

SUKHOTHAI, September 11 (TNA) - Water from the Yom River has overflown into the heart of Sukhothai Province in the Lower Thai North, causing a heavy inundation and the closure of businesses at a main market for three consecutive days and forcing people to have to travel to buy goods in nearby provinces instead. The overflowing Yom River has flooded the business area in Sukhothai's Muang District since Monday night when officials finished laying down only half of large sandbags, or "big gags", prepared for the area, making it impossible for the officials to carry on the work. Meanwhile, upstream water from Wang Chin District of Phrae Province has been flowing down through the Yom River at the speed of about 900 cubic metres per second, causing water levels of the Yom River in the heart of Sukhothai to have kept rising to some 7.2 metres now, with more areas adjacent to the Muang Sukhothai Municipality now being at risk of floods.
