Thai north hit by another quake

LAMPANG, THAILAND, September 20 (TNA) - An earthquake with magnitude 1.6 on the Richter scale occurred in Thailand’s northern Lampang province late Wednesday night, according to the provincial office of mineral resource. Director of the Lampang Provincial Office of Mineral Resources Region 1, Somboon Kosittanon, said the mild quake jolted Ngow district at 11.54pm local time, with an epicentre in Baan Huad sub-district. The director said the earthquake was caused by the moving of the fault line from Payao province through Lampang's Ngoa, Mae Mor and Teun sub-districts. The epicentre of the quake lies deep within the forest of Pa Thai National Park, quite a distance away from communities. And the residents did not feel the earth move due to the low vibration of the quake. The senior official said the northern part of Thailand has been experiencing more frequent earthquakes due to the temblor in neighbouring countries, especially Myanmar, which has strong earthquakes, prompting the fault lines in the north to move as well. During the month of September alone, the Thai north has been hit with 5 quakes, with the strongest being a 3.4 magnitude quake on the Richter scale in Chiang Rai province. (TNA)
