Thailand celebrates Int'l Peace Day

BANGKOK, September 21 (TNA) - Some one million students, teachers and school personnel nationwide observed a one-minute silence in Bangkok Friday, marking the United Nations International Peace Day or the World Peace Day. The event, jointly organized by the Universal Peace Federation (Thailand) (UPF), the Thai Ministry of Education and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), was held at Mattayom Wat Makutkasat School. During the event, which was attended by UPF chief General Terdpong Marom and Deputy Permanent Secretary for Education Sombat Suwanpitak, as well as representatives of the UNESCO and some 4,000 schools nationwide, a peace statement of Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was also read. According to the deputy permanent secretary for education, Friday’s activity commemorated co-existence of all human races and was also aimed to promote a sense of peace or a peaceful mind among local children and youths, implying a hope for their fostering world peace in their ages.
